Traditional Karate, Owensboro held
its annual Dojo Shiai (in school spirit tournament), Saturday,
Nov 4.
The event had over 40 competitors,
including several out-of-town guests. Sensei Sonny Kim, Japanese
Karate-Do of Cincinnati, brought a team, as did Devin Foster
from the University of Kentucky Karate Club.
This year we had four divisions
of competitors. Each competitor was required to perform the
kata selected for their division and then perform 10 selected
kumite moves.
The division winners were:
Novice Division (white - orange belt)
Anna Kate
Andrew Sandefur
Intermediate Division (green
- purple belt)
John Bloss - Japanese Karate-Do, Cincinnati
Gabby Canat
Advanced Division (brown
belts)
Bill Fennessy - Japanese Karate-Do, Cincinnati
DJ Ottman
Black Belt Division
Dave Newton
Craig Morris
The purpose of the Annual Shiai
is to help build Budo Spirit in the Dojo through friendly
competition. The Dojo Shiai also serves as one of the selection
criteria for the TSKA Elite competition team. Over the next
month Sensei will be inviting those students who show Great
Spirit and interest in competition to join the TSKA Elite
competition team.
This is the third year that we
have hosted this event and every year the competition has
gotten better.
